Bye Dry January…

I’ve noticed lots of bars and hotels seem to be hosting ‘End of Dry January’ parties this coming weekend…it’s the first I’ve heard of it but why not ey?

As you regular readers know, any excuse to wheel the home bar out works for me. Ours is a decommissioned airplane trolley with ample room to store all of the required equipment for an impromptu party at home.

Here’s how ours was styled for New Years Eve.

Here’s our guide to a stylish & ready for action home bar:

  • Make sure you’re stocked up on all of your favourite spirits & mixers, things in pretty bottles look great as they are but if something is in a bland or dull bottle pour it into a vintage decanter & it instantly looks ace.
  • Accessories (all bar trolleys need fairy lights and paper pom poms). Have these strung across ready to flick on when you fancy a Saturday night G&T. Scatter some Champagne corks in any empty spaces to remind you of the celebration the Champagne was drunk for.
  • Paper straws in a jar look inviting to grab and add to your glass, I tend to buy them in different colours & patterns depending on the time of year…this month will be pink & red for Valentines.
  • Don’t forget to have your measures handy…the ratios need to be perfect for the perfect cocktail  just like they do for the perfect Victoria sponge (taking Mary Berry’s word for that).

Now all that’s left to do is grab your Mason Shaker and shake up your favourite cocktail.

Our choice would be The Mid Winter Marg from W&P Designs (the designers of the original Mason Shaker & authors of the great cocktail recipe book Shake: A New Perspective on Cocktails. Here’s their recipe:

The Mid-Winter Marg
makes two cocktails

  • 3 shots of tequila
  • 1 & 1/2 shots Cointreau
  • 1 & 1/2 shots fresh lime juice
  • 1 & 1/2 shots fresh grapefruit juice
  • 2 slices of fresh lime (to garnish)
  • Chilli Salt (made with equal parts dried chilli & sea salt)
  1. Combine the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and grapefruit juice in the shaker.
  2. Add ice to above the level of the liquid and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into chilled rocks glasses rimmed with chilli salt and containing large cubes of ice. Garnish with lime slices.

What’s your tipple of choice this weekend?

Cheers!
