Creating a pirate bedroom on a budget – Ikea hack!

As anyone who has followed this blog or LMH across social media will know, I LOVE designing kids spaces. Bedroom’s, playrooms, boys, girls IDC I just love making a fun, multi functional space that I know kids are going to love.

So, when we moved into our temporary rental hope I was a little disheartened that I couldn’t provide my own imaginative little boy with what other clients were getting from me.  The plan was to purchase a statement bed from Cuckooland that would make enough of an impact to distract from the lack of decor & colour on the walls BUT when it come down to it we just couldn’t bring ourselves to invest £££ in a house that we’re staying in for less than a year when we don’t know that the bed will work in his future bedroom.

Back to the drawing board…

We decided on an Ikea hack for the bed. We used an Ikea Kura bed, this gave us the height needed to create a fun play space & storage area underneath the bed and what small child doesn’t love sleeping on a high bed!? We wallpapered the panelling on the bed in a distressed wooden plank print (an absolute bargain from B&Q IMO & comes in a textured effect which I love). Underneath the bed we added festoon light, a draped fishing net (complete with inflatable parrot!) and a yellow ships wheel as how can a pirate steer across the seven seas without one?!

To finish the space we added a world map and adventure print above the bed, for the captain to plan his next adventure each night. I then dressed the bed with a shark print duvet set & a cute pirate hat cushion (found in TKMAXX clearance for £1.70).

The rest of the room is filled with storage from Ikea & a cool locker wardrobe which adds more yellow to the room & some much needed character. The only thing I’d like to add is a cool pirate themed lamp which, time premitting, I’d quite like to upcycle from old toys a la 2LG.

Here are some images of the finished room & bed, what do you think? I’m pretty pleased with it for a temporary fix in our rental home.
